Lazy Lion

Sunday, 28 March 2010

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.  Caught cat napping again, are we?  Sometimes life is so hard you just want to sleep things off, especially if you have had a heavy lunch.  This lion looks delightfully sleepy - but you still wouldn't want to get too close, perhaps.  The eyes may look almost closed but lions have excellent hearing and even a small movement would properly wake this one up!

Home Sweet Home

It's a tough life, being a cat sometimes.  Just that need to be alone sometimes gets the better of you and when those humans really annoy you, then anywhere will do.  Just as long as it's nice and quiet - we don't really care!  Hey, you with the camera, clear off!  Can't you see I just want a little of my own space?

Otter Photobomb

Saturday, 27 March 2010

Just when you think you have the perfect pose for the camera, one of your friends completely ruins the shot by gurning for the camera.  This is commonly known as photobombing and even the animal world seems to be getting in on the act these days.  The Oriental Small-clawed Otter at the back seems to be taking a perverse pleasure in ruining the shot for his friend in the front.  What a little 'otter!

Moratorium on Whaling Likely to be Swept Away

Tuesday, 23 March 2010

In a move likely to confound conservationsists and - let's face it - sensible people all over the world, it looks very much like that moratorium on whaling will be swept away later on this year.  Looks like Japan, Norway and Iceland will be the three nations most responsible for the ultimate extinction of any number of species of whales in their pursuit of money.  A great shame but not one that is a massive surprise as the US - for a long time a great supporter of the moratorium - has inexplicably given in to pressure from these countries and now supports the lifting of the ban.  The NZ Herald has the story.

A Day in the Life of Romeo the Cat

This is charming.  Romeo is a cat and, like other cats he likes to spend his days doing, well, cat like things.  Here, his human companion Daniel Lowe, records a day in his life.  Romeo is without doubt the star of this particlular show but he has one or two co-stars in for the ride too.

This is just a lovely short to sit back, watch and relax with - it doesn't pretend to be anything else.  However, is is a great snapshot of a day in the life of one very cool cat!

Fossa Fella

You probably haven't heard of the Fossa before - but what a charming fella he is. A native of Madagascar the closest relative in the animal kingdom that his guy has is the mongoose. As such the Fossa is the largest mammalian carnivore on the island of Madagascar (unless you count us of course). There are only about two and a half thousand of these animals left in the wild, with numbers declining as their habitat becomes disconnetced and patchy due to the growth of the human population.

The Wentletrap - An Artistic Wormhole

Saturday, 20 March 2010

This amazing construct is the shell of the Wentletrap, which is a predatory sea snail. The name for the animal comes from the Dutch for a spiral staircase so the snail is well named.  The snails are sometimes referred to as staircase or ladder shells too.    They are noted for the pure geometry of their shells which are more or less turret shaped and consist of tightly wound whorls which create a high spiral.  As the shells are white and appear almost like porcelein it is no surprise that these shells are highly prized by collectors.

Have A Break? The Ad That YouTube Banned

Thursday, 18 March 2010

Nestlé have managed to get this ad banned from YouTube.  Perhaps the truth leaves a nasty taste in their mouths too.

The truth is, though, that Nestlé, the maker of Kit Kat, uses palm oil from companies that are trashing Indonesian rainforests, threatening the livelihoods of local people and pushing orang-utans towards extinction.

We all deserve to have a break - but having one shouldn't involve taking a bite out of Indonesia's precious rainforests. Ask Nestlé to give rainforests and orang-utans a break and stop buying palm oil from destroyed forests.

Is It a Bird, Is It a Plane? No, It's a Weedy Seadragon!

Old maps, when unknown or dangerous territories were shown, would have the legend There Be Dragons upon them.  Whether or not they existed in real life is one thing but this little guy isn't going to sink any ships in a hurry.  He is a Weedy Seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus).  They live in cooler waters around the coast of southern Australia and up to depths of one hundred and fifty feet.  Some of them can measure up to forty five centimeters in length and live a surprisingly long time - ten years.  The species is, perhaps unsurprisingly, related to the sea horse.

The snout you can see is what they use to suck up their food - mostly small shrimp.  We would probably have preferred them to be called leafy rather than weedy (too many beach and sand kicking connotations) but this species is, weedy or not, gorgeous.

Cat Etiquette 101 - Posture

Wednesday, 17 March 2010

Correct posture is everything - a single paw out of place and you can, very quickly, look rather louche (or just down right trashy).  This cat is called Sofia, which is a classy name indeed.  However, this feline friend lets the side down badly by plonking herself down in a position that is just a little less than ladylike.  A how not to do it, indeed!  The cat will feature large in the Ark In Space, so it is quite right that one should be the subject of our very first proper post.  We hope in the future to bring you many more excellent pictures of cats - and perhaps some classier ones too!
