The Wentletrap - An Artistic Wormhole

Saturday, 20 March 2010

This amazing construct is the shell of the Wentletrap, which is a predatory sea snail. The name for the animal comes from the Dutch for a spiral staircase so the snail is well named.  The snails are sometimes referred to as staircase or ladder shells too.    They are noted for the pure geometry of their shells which are more or less turret shaped and consist of tightly wound whorls which create a high spiral.  As the shells are white and appear almost like porcelein it is no surprise that these shells are highly prized by collectors.
